We had a conversation with Steve Kaya (Vocals). Enjoy!
Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.
Tell us a few things about BLESSED CHILD (Members, Starting Year etc).
BC was originally founded by Jens and Steve in 2018 as a 2 man project. A short time later, there was also an E.P., but the first time was that Marco (Walter) joined the second guitar in 2019. In 2020, the first recordings for the E.P. 'Monolith' were ready to start, but without real drums. That's why Michael Grunert was asked by Our Souls if he could record them. In the course of the drum recordings by Michael, Holger Neu was also a bassist and BC were complete for the first time. The E.P. Monolith and the first long player The Burning Shade were then formed in this cast.
You are going to release your new album ''Crossing The Pit''. Tell us a few things about this project.
The last long player was a first sign of life for us and we finally could play live with it (previously it was not possible for reasons we all know). We quickly found out what we are good and what songs work well. That's why the new album is shorter in terms of songs and playing time, but can be heard more fluently in context. We have played half of the songs live from this album and know that they work well there. Now we hope the other songs do that if we play live again.
Recently you have released on your YouTube Channel your new official music video "Roll With The Changes". Tell us about this experience of making a video clip.
The video should not cost money, but should introduce or reproduce the band well. Marco had various ideas and we could also implement some of it. It is not a high gloss video, but will also not be a high gloss band. Blessed Child are a metal band and they are not to hold your hand when you are sad, but to beat you into your face.
Are you in searching for a record label and what do you prefer, Label or DIY and why?
We are not really looking for a label or something. We have found out that we could do a lot of things alone and, of course, no compromises have to be made. But as always, with the right partner is all possible. The difficulty in DIY process is of course the possibilities a label has and which are not feasible for us.
Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
Not really, we're quite professional about recordings and live shows. We give maximum abuse of beer consumption and the consequences of it (but we only talk about it internally).
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
FUCKIN’ VINYL ONLY, but also tape is okay. But it is increasingly preferred to have the digital variant of many, which is okay for us and therefore we offer these variants. But we as a band are clear that the digital variant is the best choice from pure sound. Personally, I only own vinyl and tapes, but often use streaming services to check out new bands.
Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Everyone in the band has different influences and if we are honest there is not one band or artist. There are however diverse artists/musicians whom we all admire and were/are important for each individual. But to give an example…Metallica during the RTL/MOP phase is a common denominator. There are many others in addition to this, such as…Dio, Priest, Maiden, Accept, Flotsam, Entombed, Exodus and many more.
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Blood and sweat always flow, whether in the rehearsal room or live…and of course beer. One reason to make everything first of all is clearly no compromise to be made. We are responsible for everything ourselves, whether it works or not. Basically, we take a risk anyway, we put a lot of money and time into the band and don't know if it pays off. But we don't care about that, important to us is to publish music behind which we stand and which is fun for ourselves. As for our future, we have it ourselves and we will do much, but certainly do not cry around which it did not work. Every gig is a huge fun for us, every release of a song as well.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
Beer, good sound and people who’s hooked on metal...here we are. We have played with many cool bands, but one or two have stayed in memory. This wasn't about the whole thing around, rather about the band we should support…Raven. after all these years, these guys are still completely “ON FIRE” and do not compromise.
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Germany (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
Germany has a very vibrant scene in which all genres are served. I would even go so far as there are few comparable worldwide. Clubs, fanzines, webzines, of course. However, Germany is a relatively small country and accordingly it is difficult to produce as a band.
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
We know some bands, but I'm sure not all. I have something from Satan’s Wrath, Suicidal Angels, Firewind, Rotting Christ in my collection. But the highlight is certainly TRIUMPHER...Storming The Gates was an awesome masterpiece. The new one is also a fukkin' great record.
In the last 4 years, worldwide in the world, we have faced many dark, strange, and new situations in our everyday lives (covid, lockdown, etc.). Did all of this affect you positively or negatively?
Times were difficult for many people, and for others even the complete disaster. I think I can speak on behalf of all the band members that we don't want to experience this again. But we all agree that it could happen again at any time.
What are your future plans?
Splitting skulls und ripping bones, drinking beers that we don’t know and meeting cool metalheads.
Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work!
