!!!THRASH METAL FROM CHILE!!!
Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.
Tell us a few things about EVIL OFFERING (Members, Starting Year etc).
Gustavo: Hello Stavros and readers of Filthy Dogs of Metal, Evil Offering is a thrash metal band that started at the end of 98 in Antofagasta, Chile, always trying to be faithful to our sound and also looking for our identity in a style as touched as thrash metal. Currently the members are Daniel Naranjo guitar, Marcelo Mella guitar and vocals, Mauricio Ibañez bass and Gustavo Ponce de León drums.
You have recently released your album ''Ofrenda maligna''. What is the feedback from your audience as well as from the press?
Gustavo: So far we have received good comments and we have had good dissemination of Three metal forces label. We hope it continues to sell so we can invest that profit in merchandising, record more albums and tours.
Label or DIY and why?
Gustavo: We are very happy with three metal forces, it is a 100% metal and underground label and always supporting us, greetings to Mauro and Three metal forces.
Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
Gustavo: Of course there are always stories, the one that we always remember when there was a confusion on a trip and we ended up detained as soon as we arrived because out of trust we agreed to stay in an apartment that did not belong to the person who lent it to us but to a relative. The relative didn't know about this and called the fucking cops as soon as we arrived and that's how we ended up detained, then the judge realized that we had nothing to do with it and they released us and left the relative who lent us the apartment detained. She deserved it I guess hahaha.
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
Marcelo: I think it depends on your mood and the moment. If I fell romantic for the most classic and I have the time to sit and listen surely I'll choose vinyl or tape. CD gives you a different sound and a faster format. But due to work and all the time I spend away from home, digital formats are also very useful.
Your music style is Thrash Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Marcelo: We’re all between 40-43 years old, so maybe the influences are not so important now. But if you look back to the songs you can always find riffs where I tried to do something inspired by other bands. Some of them are Nuclear Assault, Annihilator, Sadus, Coroner, Testament, Exodus… well… If I show you a song and say "this is what I wanted to do" you'd understand better.
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
Marcelo: I think if the band has something good to show, the more you sacrifice (family, work, time, etc.) the more you'll succeed. We never sacrificed that much, maybe time for ours. Probably moving to a bigger city or dedicating all your time to the band would be different. But it’s hard to have all the planets aligned.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
Gustavo: My ideal show would be with a lot of stage diving, mosh, beer and playing good. We've had some shows like that, but we don't play much live either, so we're already missing a night of thrash metal and madness.
What attributes do you think that a new Thrash Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
Marcelo: So difficult, almost impossible I think, especially in this genre. You can have a unique voice like Sean Killian, unique riffs like Destruction, etc. Many bands have amazing performers, but not so good compositions... Others are not so good, but manage to record albums with a unique sound!
Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Thrash Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
Marcelo: I think it's valid. Our last album came out on CD, tape and also it’s on the platforms. I think there are bangers interested in each format, think there are bangers interested in each format, so it shouldn't be hard to decide in which format you will release your stuff.
Do you see any differences between the Chilean Metal Market & the EU Metal Market (Labels, Bands, Fans etc)?
Gustavo: I feel that the underground is underground wherever it is in any country in the world, I imagine that in the United States you have more places to play, recording studios, better, cheaper instruments and that means that there are more bands recording albums, but despite those obstacles Chile has always had good bands.
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Chile (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
Gustavo: As I mentioned in the previous answer, Chile always had a scene with great bands, currently there are many newer bands that are excellent, I could spend a long time naming several. Whenever we travel we find good metal venues but they are few. As for fanzines, I can say that there are still more and more professional paper fanzines, although fewer and fewer people consume them.
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
Marcelo: Sure, I used to edit a zine and had some approach to the Hellenic scene, remember to had Crucifier, Suicidal Angels, Released Anger, etc.
The last 4 years, worldwide in the world, we have faced many dark, strange & new situations in our everyday life (covid, lock-down etc.) Did all of this affect you positively or negatively?
Gustavo: It affected the band in a positive way since being locked up at home tidying up we started to find things about the band and a conversation led to wanting to get together and record 1 song and well after that we continue at full speed until 2024 to finalize the release of our latest LP.
What are your future plans?
Gustavo: The closest thing is to go to Valparaiso in September to play at the launch of Critical Defiance's new album, which is spectacular, so it will be a night of pure thrash in the vein. Then there is a date in Santiago in November, we have material to record an EP too so there is Evil offering for a while.
Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Gustavo: Thanks for the interview Stavros we really appreciate it, Thrash till death!!!!
