Interview with FERAL WOUND

Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.

Tell us a few things about FERAL WOUND (Members, Starting Year etc).
Hi, FERAL WOUND consists of R (vocals), A, (guitars), and B (drums). We were formed in the mid 2024 in the corrupted oligarchical city of Tangerang, just an hour drive from Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Started as a side project for each member, now we are going to release a debut EP. We play death metal-infused punk music. We rooted in oldschool death metal, crust punk/stenchcore, powerviolence, and old school thrash metal. But actually, we just write what sounds good to us while jamming, no pretentious end in mind.

You are going to release your new EP ''Desolate Dominion''. Tell us a few things about this project.
Even though each of us has already released their own albums/EPs with their previous band, this is a debut for us. And since this is our first death metal project, this is a new experience for us. So, it’s quite challenging in a fun way. As we never labelled this band as a total death metal band, the EP blends death metal and punk in 70:30 ratio. The materials are written in the studio through spontaneous jams and improvisations. The process was fun, yet unconstrained. Hence, we easily captured that ferocious sessions into a feral outcome which we love. For us, it is more than just a collection of songs; it is a statement of unrest, a bitter condemnation of a world drowning in its own corruption. The music does not simply tell a story, it forces you to confront the inevitable collapse and a cold reflection of the human condition—a cycle of pain, decay, and self-destruction.

Label or DIY and why?
We collaborate with Husted Records (Indonesia) and Cyclopean Eye Production (India). Why? For a greater chaos.

Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
Maybe not a funny story, but a fun moment for us. To keep the punkish vibe, we strict our songs to be played only with single pedal bass drum. No double bass, nor blast beats. At the early writing session, it was kind of goofy. But we, stubbornly, kept it that way. Then, when we managed to record the drum parts, we are surprised that it is actually good and suits our style.

Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
We love the presence of physical release. But since we are just a bunch of working-class dads in a corrupted third world country, vinyls are out of our reach (lol). So, realistically, we prefer tape and CD. But in the other hand, we can’t deny the future of digital platforms. It is more reachable.

Your music style is Death Metal with Punk elements. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Lots of bands influenced us. But for the EP itself, we drew inspirations from bands like Morbid Angel, Benediction, Cancer, Dismember, Gatecreeper, Obliteration, Fatum, Amebix, Demolition Hammer, Voivod, Mammoth Grinder, Caustic Wound, Gravesend, Doldrey, and Masakre. You can hear influences (or easter eggs maybe :p) from those bands in our EP.

Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
It is a tough question. Everything needs sacrifice. It all depends on your goal of being a musician, and what pace you are setting on yourself.

Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
Chaos is our ideal. We are still a new band, we only did a couple of gigs since our formation. Right now, we are planning on a future tour schedule, so hopefully we are on our way to experience that ideal chaos we are seeking.

What attributes do you think that a new Death Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
Just be your fuckin self, dude. We are tired of everybody being the same.

Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Death Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
Yes. You can’t deny it, it is the future. As a kid who was born and raised in a slump of third-world country, the digital platform and the internet are the main source to get exposed of the outside’s culture. In the late 80’s, when the physical release and magazine were the only option, only a few people could get the exposure of metal and punk culture. Ironically, most of them were the rich kids who could travel abroad. So, yeah, digital platforms (including the social media) help us reach the culture easier. Vice versa, it helps the bands to promote their work to the bigger audience. About the ideal way, we think there’s no such thing like it. It’s kind of utopic. Bands have their own way to work. As long as it is fair and square, and you can work it passionately, it is good.

Do you see any differences between the Indonesian Metal Market & the EU Metal Market (Labels, Bands, Fans etc)?
Well, the scene, the labels, or the bands, are bigger there if we compare it to our scene here. But we believe that we are as militant and barbaric as the European horde.

Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Indonesia (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
MASAKRE, EXHUMATION, and MASS 49. JUST GO CHECK THEM OUT NOW!

Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
We don’t know a lot. But, A, our guitarist, is a fan of Suicidal Angels. He could wreck his car just by hearing the riff of “Apokathilosis” while driving. That song is his favourite speeding soundtrack.

What are your future plans?
We are working on our future tour schedule. In the meantime, we are writing some new songs for the upcoming release.

Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Thank you, Filthy Dogs of Metal for the interview and the support. I hope someday our path will cross again. Stay metal, stay punk, stay being whoever you are. Fuck the fascist, fuck the oppressor. Hails!
