!!!DEPRESSIVE BLACK METAL FROM ITALY!!!
Welcome to the FILTHY DOGS OF METAL Webzine.
Tell us a few things about IN MAGNA SILA (Members, Starting Year etc).
In Magna Sila is a one man band. Since the 90’s I’ve played in many bands, mainly metal bands but not only. The last year I’ve decided to start this my own project, doing everything by myself, I felt I had something to say different from what I was playing, just as guitar player, in the other band I was (and I am) in. I prefer to remain anonymous for now, so I will not mention my other band, I just can tell that it is a kind of dark rock band.
You have recently released your EP ‘’Worthless’’. What is the feedback from your audience as well as from the press?
I had some good feedback via mail and on the social media, Worthless is like a kind of promotional EP, not for sale, so I am satisfied of the feedbacks.
Label or DIY and why?
Like I have said above it is a promo EP, so I made it without any label, but I would like to release the full length with a specialized record company.
Is there any funny or weird story from the recordings or from your live shows that you would like to share with us?
Unfortunately not. This is the price of being a one man band.
Do you prefer Vinyl, Tape, CD or Digital Format and why is that?
I prefer CD, I don’t why… maybe because I love to listen to the music while driving and in my car I have a stereo for CDs.
Your music style is Depressive Black Metal. Which are your main influences (Favourite Artists / Bands etc.)
Well, this answer could be quite long. I had a lot of influences, starting from the second wave of black metal, I mean bands like Enslaved, Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal and so on… I must admit that extreme metal bands like Cradle Of Filth and Children Of Bodom had some influence on my songwriting, then of course old school metal acts like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. I like classical music, or at least part of it. I have to admit that I listen often to Gothic Rock, so for example I can say that The Sisters Of Mercy were an inspiration and I loved Type O Negative. In the last weeks I was really inspired by a Depressive Black Metal band called None.
Which things do you think a band should sacrifice in order to succeed? Have you ever sacrificed anything in your life for a better future for your band?
I think that the only thing that you can sacrifice is your free time, if you sacrifice your family or your ideas you are doing the wrong thing.
Describe your ideal live show as a performance band. Have you already experienced that?
Although I don’t like to play live shows I’ve played live many times, obviously not with In Magna Sila. I think that every show could be a great show and that the venue where you play has a great role in this.
What attributes do you think that a new Black Metal Band should have in order to gain identity and be unique?
This is hard. Probably I think that a good thing could be to mantain the Black Metal roots adding something new, but the main thing is to write good songs, by the way this is the most difficult part of course.
Do you believe that Digital Platforms help the new Black Metal Bands? Which, do you think, is the ideal way for a band to promote its work?
I don’t know, maybe this is the future, but I don’t like digital platforms. I can save Bandcamp that is a good one to find interesting bands, but things like Spotify really sucks… they are not my cup of tea. Probably the best way to promote a new Black Metal band is to be released by a professional record company, promotion is their work.
Tell us a few things about the New Underground Metal Scene in Italy (Bands, Fanzines, Webzines, Metal Clubs etc.)
Years ago I was into the underground metal scene, now I go in metal clubs not very often. When I can I try to discover new bands and go to their shows. In the early 2000’s we had a lot of interesting groups like Aborym, Doomraiser and tons of Power Metal bands. The last summer I’ve seen a live show of a band called Aganoor, they play an interesting kind of Doom Metal but they still have to release their debut album. Talking about clubs I’ve to say that they are dying one by one day after day.
Do you know anything about the Hellenic Metal Scene?
I like Naer Mataron, although I don’t like their political point view I had to say their music is great. Of course I like Rotting Christ.
In the last 4 years, worldwide in the world, we have faced many dark, strange, and new situations in our everyday lives (covid, lockdown, etc.). Did all of this affect you positively or negatively?
I am a misanthrope by nature, so during the pandemic I had no problems and I’ve found a lot of time to compose music and reading. Now I have a family so maybe things could be different.
What are your future plans?
I am finishing my full length and I’ll have to find a record label. I can say that the album probably will sound a little different from the “Worthless EP”. I mean this one will be not only Depressive Black Metal, but it will encapsulate elements of Old School Black Metal, acoustic parts, some experimental sick stuffs and traditional metal.
Thank you very much for your time & keep up the good work! The closure is yours.
Thank you very much for this interview and thank you to the ones who will give a listen to In Magna Sila.
