THE DEAD FLOWERS GRAVES is an Occult Doom Metal band hailing from Italy, blending the heavy, atmospheric weight of Doom metal with a deep, enigmatic exploration of the mystical and the unknown. Active since 2017, they have released three EPs and two singles. Here, we are focusing on their second EP, ''Spectrum'', which was released in 2022 via Church Of Crow Records. We also had the opportunity for a very interesting conversation with 19.03 (Vocals) and 13.11 (Bass), which you can read HERE. As you may have noticed, their nicknames are derived from their birthdays, and I must say that I find this to be a clever and unique idea. The day of one's birth can symbolize much about their personality and life in general. THE DEAD FLOWERS GRAVES are deeply immersed in occultism, and from the letters (which are part of the extra content in the limited edition ''Spectrum'' Box Set, along with each member’s experiences with the unknown) that 19.03 (Happy B- Day!! I wish you all the best!!! Today is 19/03!!) kindly sent me alongside their beautiful releases, it’s clear that they are well-versed in encounters with spirits and entities. These experiences heavily influence their compositions, infusing their music with a ghostly atmosphere. The heavy doom riffing, haunted female vocals, and background organ create an ideal soundtrack for '70s Italian horror films! 19.03's voice is ethereal, charismatic, and absolutely captivating, elevating the compositions to another level. Her vocals in "Prophetia" are particularly enchanting. The guitar sound is heavy and complements the rhythm section (bass and drums) perfectly, while the organ’s eerie presence will certainly haunt you! ''Spectrum'' contains four songs that will transport you to haunted, abandoned cemeteries, where you'll feel both mystery and melancholy in the air. Each track is meticulously crafted, with haunting riffs and atmospheric layers that draw listeners into a trance-like state.The lyrics are equally captivating, often exploring internal themes and harnessing the power of symbolism to conjure up images of creepy stories that you’ll wish you hadn’t read.The production is solid, recorded, mixed, and mastered at MAT SOUND MIXING STUDIO. However, I would have preferred the drums to sound a bit stronger.The CD edition that I hold in my hands (Grazie mille, 19.03) comes in a beautiful Digipak packaging, with a four-page booklet featuring the lyrics (written exclusively by 19.03 based on her personal experiences). It also includes an iconic photo of 19.03, which I imagine would make an excellent large poster! Additionally, the cover artwork is fantastic, perfectly setting the tone for the album’s atmosphere. THE DEAD FLOWERS GRAVES offer a haunting, atmospheric journey that goes beyond the boundaries of doom metal. Fans of doom, mysticism, and the darker side of music will find plenty to appreciate in their hauntingly personal sound.
